Naive Faith?

Tags:

I received a power point through email the other day; it is
about the songs of a three years old brother help saved the life of a dying
new born sister. A very touching story,
I forwarded the power point to my Dharma brothers, here is one response that
came back:

This is very sentimental and touching and......how should I say it, very
Oprah-ist. Just have naive faith and everything will work out fine.

How about another twist to this story? The baby girl struggled for a few
days, suffered a lot as far as we can surmise and finally, God forbids,
in spite of all the lovely songs her brother sang to her, did not make
it.

Her mother was devastated. She thought to herself, 'how could a loving,
benevolent God take away a life so tender and innocent. She barely has
time to do any bad deeds or make any enemies, yet she had to suffer in
her short life for no apparent reason.'

'If God is almighty and loving, then there should be no suffering in this world.'

But then, it won't make a good sales pitch.

All religions emphasize faith. As Buddhist, what do we believe in?

The Buddha taught us not to have faith outside of ourselves. So, if there is faith in Buddhism, it is faith that we can stay on the path and following the teachings. We can do it! Anybody can become enlightened. I believe that naive faith is dangerous, as it absolves us of having to do any work on ourselves - Virya.

The first story is lovely, as it shows that a small child has compassion for his sister. The second story is what a jaded person would prefer. Preference for either story makes the Way difficult.

To have a deeper understanding of Faith, I recommend the book "The Awakening of Faith" 《大乘起信論》, preferably the original Chinese version.

Also, Chapter 7 to 12 of the Atamvasaka Sutra specifically attends to the Dharma Practices/Methods concerning Faith.

Hope this information is of help...
